The aim of the Postgraduate Program offered by the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication in "Cultural Informatics and Communication", is the training of highly specialized scientists and researchers in the field of cultural data promotion and designation, using New Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). At the beginning of the 21st century, the rapid development of Digital Technologies and Digital Culture - Digital Humanities has been the trigger for the formation of an ambience of intense reflection and meditation about the integration of disciplines related to information technologies with the broader field of cultural studies. This development contributed to the radical overthrow of established theoretical conceptions on society, culture and technology, but also to the final deconstruction of the traditional analytical boundaries between theoretical, scientific and applied disciplines. The outcome of the above was the formation of a new dynamic condition, both in theoretical / scientific research and the media and methods of recording, documenting and presenting cultural data.

In this context, the establishment of a new interdisciplinary field, that of Cultural Informatics and Communication, has emerged. It is a field that enhances the prolific connection of the fields of critical theory and cultural studies with the technological developments that affect communication and communication practices. “Cultural Informatics and Communication” is a program that detects and promotes cultural pluralism, while also expanding and enriching the conceptual framework of cultural information. Moreover it approaches the multiple manifestations and aspects of cultural data through the principles of intertextuality, interaction and multimedia, and therefore, it is able to complete, in a creative, original but also substantial way, the contemporary notions of memory, “civilization” / culture, and identity.

The main objectives of the program are:

-The promotion of scientific knowledge and research in the wider interdisciplinary field of Cultural Informatics and Communication

-The development of new research directions related to the connection of computer applications with the promotion and projection of cultural data

-The shaping of cultural policies with the use of ICT.

-The investigation of the compatibility of the provided knowledge with the needs of recording and promotion of cultural heritage from a theoretical point of view, in combination with applied practices, such as the representation with the use of 3D Graphics or Augmented Reality technologies

-The contribution to the expansion of developmental, economic, and technological policies in Greece as they are shaped within the contemporary context of the Information Society

-The (continuous) connection of the provided knowledge with the international developments, but also with the individual research directions and specializations in the fields of cultural promotion and designation of the (material and intangible) cultural heritage with the use of ICT.
