CULTURAL INFORMATICS AND COMMUNICATION
The Prograduate Programme (or MSc) in “Cultural Informatics and Communication” aims to train scientists and researchers highly qualified in the applications of Informatics to the fields of Culture, Museology and Audiovisual Arts.
IDENTITY
The Prograduate Programme design combines the three pillars of theoretical thinking in humanities and social studies, information science and technology as well as in creative design.
Within this context, it provides the theoretical and methodological background that supports the use of contemporary thinking and practices in generating specific cultural products and goods, whether they are individual digital and/or audiovisual works or more complex exhibition environments.
The Prograduate Programme aims to provide students with specialised knowledge and skills so to enable them to respond to the needs of society and economy.
High academic quality in the educational process is ensured by a combination of highly qualified teaching staff, a student-centered approach and the adoption of new methods of teaching, research and creation. This combination ensures a context of interaction with the labour market which is in full compliance with the latest national and international requirements.

During their studies in the Prograduate Programme in “Cultural Informatics and Communication”, graduates acquire knowledge and experience that allow them to find a career in a variety of fields, such as in Cultural & Creative Industries. These sectors in the field of study are as follows:
Museology
Graduates of the specialisation “Museology” can work in museums and other related public and private organisations that deal with the management of cultural heritage and contemporary cultural production that are in dialogue with the needs of society. More specifically, graduates can design and implement exhibitions on a wide range of topics covering cultural, social, historical, environmental and other issues, thus creating experiences that combine the use of physical objects with audiovisual media and contemporary emerging digital technologies. Graduates may also work in public or private companies that produce products to promote and implement social cultural heritage. Graduates can also work as researchers in private and public organisations, carrying out a variety of research projects on the organisation and management of cultural heritage, and on universities, while working on Ph.D. dissertations or participating in other research projects.
Culture and Documentary Production
Graduates of the specialization “Culture and Documentary Film Production” can immediately work in the audiovisual industry and, more specifically, in the field of documentaries and documentary films either as freelance filmmakers (scriptwriters, directors) or in a production company of the same field or a TV channel or digital platform as directors, editors, cameramen, scriptwriters. The graduates of this specialisation are currently working in their own productions or in companies such as Vice, ERT (Greece), News 24/7, RIK Cyprus, etc. They can also work as researchers in private and public organisations, carrying out a variety of audiovisual studies and at universities, working on a Ph.D. dissertation.
Digital Cultural Product Design
The main sector in which the graduates of the specialisation “Design of Digital Cultural Products” are employed is in the production of digital content and software in public and private organizations, in design and development companies of digital applications and virtual as well as mixed reality games as well as in advertising companies. Furthermore, graduates of this specialisation can be employed in public and private cultural and tourism agencies, primarily in charge of a digital organisation and promotion of their products. Finally, an important area of employment for graduates is research and development, whether this is carried out by public institutions – such as universities within the context of research projects and Ph.D. dissertations – or in private research and development centres.

To promote scientific knowledge and research in Cultural Studies as well as in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), specializing in the fields of Digital Culture, Museology and Audiovisual Arts.

To develop new research directions, methodologies and tools in the field of ICT, in connection with the needs of recording, highlighting and promoting Greek, pan-European and international Cultural Heritage.

To develop academic competencies and strengthen students’ communication, collaboration and commitment management skills through group work, group presentations and other collaborative forms of academic study and work.

To provide high quality postgraduate education, so that graduates can contribute to the cultural, economic and technological policy of Greece.

The Prograduate Programme (or MSc) in “Cultural Informatics and Communication” is one of the postgraduate programmes of the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication. For 23 years now, the Department has been bringing together the fields of cultural information and communication technologies, thus building a dynamic profile and creating an autonomous and recognized interdisciplinary identity in our country (i.e. Greece).
