CULTURAL INFORMATICS AND COMMUNICATION

The Master’s Program in “Cultural Informatics and Communication” aims to train highly specialized scientists and researchers in the applications of Informatics in the fields of Culture, Museology, and Audiovisual Arts.

IDENTITY

The structure of the curriculum combines the three pillars of theoretical thinking in the humanities and social sciences, computer science and technology, and creative design.

Within this framework, the program provides the theoretical and methodological background that supports the utilization of contemporary thinking and practices for the creation of specific cultural products and goods, whether they are individual digital and/or audiovisual works or more complex exhibition environments.

The Master’s program aims to provide specialized knowledge and skills to students so that they can meet the needs of society and the economy.

During their studies in the Master’s Program in “Cultural Informatics and Communication,” graduates acquire knowledge and experience that allow them to pursue professional opportunities in a variety of sectors within the Cultural and Creative Industries. These sectors, according to the study directions, are as follows:

Museology

Graduates specializing in “Museology” can work in museums and other related public and private organizations involved in the management of cultural heritage and contemporary cultural production in dialogue with societal needs. Specifically, they can design and implement exhibitions covering a wide range of themes including cultural, social, historical, environmental, and others, creating experiences that combine the use of physical objects with audiovisual media and modern emerging digital technologies. Additionally, graduates may work in public or private enterprises producing products for the promotion and social utilization of cultural heritage. They can also work as researchers in private and public organizations conducting various studies on the organization and management of cultural heritage, as well as in universities pursuing doctoral dissertations or participating in other research projects.

Culture and Documentary Production

Graduates specializing in “Culture and Documentary Film Production” can immediately work in the audiovisual industry, particularly in the field of documentaries and recording films, either as freelance cinematographers (screenwriters, directors) or in a production company within the same field, television channel, or digital platform as directors, editors, cinematographers, or screenwriters. Graduates of the “Culture and Documentary Film Production” specialization are currently working in their own productions or in companies such as Vice, ERT, News 24/7, RIK Cyprus, among others. They can also work as researchers in private and public organizations conducting various audiovisual studies and in universities pursuing doctoral dissertations.

Digital Cultural Product Desing

The main area in which graduates specializing in “Digital Cultural Product Design” are employed is in the production of digital content and software in both public and private organizations, design and development companies for digital applications and virtual and mixed reality games, as well as in advertising agencies. Furthermore, graduates of this specialization can be employed in public and private cultural and tourism organizations, primarily undertaking digital organization, promotion, and advertising of their exhibits/products. Lastly, a significant employment sector for graduates is research and development (R&D), either conducted by public entities such as universities within the framework of research projects and doctoral dissertations or taking place in private research and development centers.

The Master’s Program in “Cultural Informatics and Communication” is one of the postgraduate programs offered by the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication. For the past 23 years, the Department has been fostering a fruitful interaction between the knowledge domains of information technologies of culture and communication, building a dynamic profile and establishing an autonomous and recognized interdisciplinary identity in our country.
